making a tablix heading's dependency on text box less apparent to user

Hi, we run std 2008.  Everyone seems to be saying that if i want a general heading above my tablix, insert a row above my column heading row etc.

It looks to me like this is somewhat restrictive in that I am bound by my designed text box width for a heading which could be longer than an appealing column width.  I dont really want to run the heading into the next cell.  It appears that if I remove borders, that affects the row below.   Only the fill and hide (perhaps others I'm not interested in at this time too) attributes seem to be independent of the row below (that's good for adjacent columns) which contains my column headings.  So I am left with a heading that is enclosed in a box, making it appear to the user like I am somewhat restricted in design.  What am I missing?
