Merging cells (horizontally) depending on the row

Is it possible to merge cells within several columns depending on the row number?

e.g.

   colA   colB   colC   colD

1    x        a       b        c

2    y     -------------------------

3    z     -------------------------

for row # 2, #3, colB colC colD are merged.
