Where Did The Row Group Parentheses Come From?

I have a report in SSRS 2008 R2 that rolls up some payment data into a drill-down report and it works fine.

I then added it to another project for use as a template and something odd is happening.

I added a group in front of the left-most column to provide a higher parent group, but when I preview the report, the second column has data in it, even though it is set up to Hide and to toggle when the plus-sign in the left-hand column is clicked;

The "Service Category" column is the one I added. In the original, "Incurred Period" was the first column, but "Admit Date" showed properly - i.e., hidden - until I clicked on the plus next to the number in the "Incurred Period," of course.

So, I went through as many property screens as I could find, both for the groups and for the relevant text boxes, but they seemed to all be set up properly and, relatively speaking, identically to their counterparts on the original, properly functioning report.

Then, I noticed that the Row Group giving me a problem had parentheses around the field name in the Groupings Pane;

These were not present around any of the field names in the original.

I figure this is my problem. But, I've toggled every property I can think of in the "INCURRED_PERIOD" group and text box, but nothing seems to matter.

What are these parentheses, where might they have come from, might they be causing my problem and, if they are the cause of my problem, how do I get rid of them?

Thanx in advance!
