wildcard function for characters

I have a requirement where in a need to use the wildcard for the parameter giving a condition where if i put atleast 2 characters i should be able to get the name. like first name <2 ,lastname<2, companyname<2 .

any is there any function which act like a wildcard for characters like few comanynames have charatcers like !,* in the names so ??????
